The Mazotos Museum
Costas Argyrou is probably the best known naive sculptor
in Cyprus. Born in the village he was a hard working, direct man who was a
farmer and miller with his own olive press and gravel washing
plant.
He always said that it was the art in the Larnaca
Archaeological museum that inspired him when he came to realise that he had
a talent to 'mould stone'. At the age of 52 he decided to start a new career
and work in his home village of Mazotos. He was often to be seen outside his
workshop creating his art, and was a part of village life. In his later
years he was hampered by the onset of arthritis - but despite this
difficulty he continued to create and give enormous pleasure to all who knew
him.
His figures are solid and decisive and reflect his own
view on life.
His subjects are based on his own experience and
knowledge of the rural environment

As one approaches the village from the Larnaca (Camel
Farm) direction the Museum can be seen on the right down a short road. It
was opened by the President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides in June
1997.
